November News, Free Account Limits, Increased Outbound Data

Post by RollerNetSupport » Mon Nov 26, 2007 2:23 pm

We've been busy with changes to the Roller Network this holiday season! In the recent survey we sent out there were many suggestions in response; these will be added to the account control center as we progress. One major feature we're working on deploying before the end of the year is Primary DNS service. Although you'll never see all of the behind the scenes changes we make, you will continue to enjoy the speed and reliability you've come to expect from Roller Network.

Service Level Updates

We've simplified the service levels a bit; there is no longer a distinction between personal and business accounts (not that we could enforce it anyway). Although the first two levels are still called "Personal", everyone is encouraged to purchase the level that corresponds to the class of service they are looking for. We strongly recommend anyone who relies on our services to at least purchase a Personal package. Our paid accounts do not have strict limits. Roller Network is one of the few (possibly only) that allows unlimited domains and users with soft usage limits - starting at only $34.95 a year.

Free Account Limits

Our first announcement relates to our free Basic accounts. If you have any level of paid account, this does not apply to you. This is also part of why we simplified the service levels a bit to encourage upgrades.

Effective December 9, 2007, we will be enforcing the usage limits for free accounts. Our free account users have always been subject to a usage limit, however, they have also enjoyed extended usage as it was not actively enforced. Please be aware that if you are relying on a free account for mail delivery and you exceed the posted limits, your mail domains will be disabled until the next day. The limit on free accounts is currently 1 megabyte of data or 50 messages per day, whichever comes first.

If this will affect you, we strongly recommend upgrading your account to suit your needs. You probably won't find a better deal out there for all the freedom our mail services allow. Our accounts start at only $34.95/year - which is slightly less than $3/month - and continue to allow the unlimited use and extremely flexible usage recommendations you've come to enjoy over the last several years.

Again, if you have ANY level of paid account, this DOES NOT affect you! There are no hard limits on any of our paid accounts. Free accounts will still be available; this is not a required upgrade.

Increased Mail Limits

We've increased our mail usage limits on most of our accounts, ranging from 100 megabytes to 6 gigabytes of incoming and outgoing mail per day. There is no "message count" limit for incoming mail. Outbound mail still has a message count limit, but we've raised the numbers a bit. (And the only reason we still have a message count limit for outbound mail is because we need to discourage spammers from using our service and ruining it for everyone else.) Additionally, there used to be a separate data use per day limit for outbound account - we have done away with this in favor of simplifying incoming and outbound to the same number.

Mail Logs

It's been a long-standing problem that the mail logs are very, very slow. We've tweaked the indexes around a bit and spend it up a bit for most queries, but we're still working on optimizing it for all possible search cases. We've also added a time search option to the mail logs so you can now narrow a search to a particular time range, and moved things around on the log display a bit so it's easier to see the data that belongs with each entry.

In Conclusion...

Although we frequently post announcements on the Roller Network forums, we're going to try and roll the recent updates into an email every one or two months. We're usually pretty quiet as we tend to prefer keeping email to a minimum, but many of our customers sometimes wonder if someone is still alive on our end. One thing we'd like to touch on is how we operate. Sometimes there's concern from people hearing about data center outages, power shortages, hosting facility trouble, and other failures of that nature. The Roller Network is immune to these problems since we own and operate our own facility - we never rely on a third party to keep the servers running. It's just one of many advantages we feel the personal touch can offer to you, our customers.

There will be another announcement when the new Primary DNS service is released. Thank you for your continued support!
