RollerNet needs a Twitter handle

Post by sttng359 »

RollerNetwork needs a Twitter handle or how else am I suppose to mention them when sending a Tweet about them. The people behind RollerNetwork have already done an excellent job with transparency and public relations by providing the forums and blog, but I think they could take it a step further and through in a Twitter account. Just today I was mentioning RollerNetwork to someone through Twitter, but had to revert to a hash tag instead of a mention. The actual account could just be an automated feed of the blog or http://status.rollernet.us/, but it would still allow you to track mentions or other feedback.

I must admit that I don't really know anything about Twitter, but I'll give it a try.

My ISP uses a Twitter handle solely for reporting network status. I'm subscribed to it with devices updates which means I get an SMS to my cellphone every time they send a Tweet. It was useful one time when they had a fire near their data center which took out the Internet. When someone from the company I work at called be to troubleshoot why the Internet was down, I was able to clearly tell them it was not our problem and we just had to wait til the issue was resolved instead of coming in to the office to fix the problem. I've written a few small Perl scripts myself to post messages to Twitter and it could probably be integrated in with the existing mechanism for http://status.rollernet.us/ which, by the way, seems to be down at the moment.

We retired status.rollernet.us a while ago; its replacement is http://www.rollernetstatus.com (if there are still links to the old one somewhere then I need to fix them). It was moved because it was a sub-domain and still relied on some small portion of our infrastructure (DNS). The domain rollernetstatus.com is using external hosting and external DNS.

No, I'm not aware of any links outside my bookmarks, I just had that one memorized. Might be handy to make it a permanent redirect.

I went ahead and put a notice that it was moved at the old location.

Actually, when I first tried to access the status page I went to http://status.rollernet.us/ and then I remembered that you went with a dedicated domain for the page and I was just being dyslexic so I tried http://rollernetstatus.us/ and got an "It works!" page. My next guess was to try http://rollernetstatus.net/, (somehow I think of .net for rollernet, not .com) and got the same page "It works!" I guess I need to use a real bookmark instead of just memorizing the page.

This is an old topic, but while going through the forums I figured I should mention that we did start using Twitter in September 2012. We are @rollernetnv
