Trouble Whitelisting

Post by Black20VT »

Hi there,

It's probably something I'm doing wrong, but I'm having problems whitelisting emails that are sent via a web form.

I've added the following;

Mail Filter Level

Source IP if Host matches...
Sender email matches...

SpamAssassin Level

Sender address matches...

Yet, it doesn't seem to affect the scoring and I don't see anything added to the scoring.

I've read through the instructions, but still seem to be having problems.

Can someone offer a little help

Thanks.

There's a tiny catch: the SpamAssassin filter looks at the headers of the message, whereas the other filters look at the SMTP sender. These to values can be different, such as for mailing lists where the "From:" header shows the list address, but the SMTP sender (the MAIL FROM) could be a bounce address or VERP-formatted address.

The SpamAssassin whitelist for sender address is looking for one of these headers to match:

Envelope-Sender
Resent-Sender
X-Envelope-From
From

Edit: It should also be checking "Return-Path", but it's ambiguous in the SpamAssassin documentation.

Hi glendale2x,

Thanks for getting back to me, but I must be doing something fundamentally wrong, as I've just had another couple of goes, but still seem to be having problems.

When there's a match in the 'Whitelist', should it also show in the log?

Should I send an email to support complete with an example of the received headers?

Thanks again.

We've updated the content filter to append an X-Envelope-From header with the SMTP MAIL FROM sender before the SpamAssassin phase just to be sure it'll always have that information available.

Ah ha, perfect. I can now see the Whitelist entry in the SpamAssassin score in the logs.

Thanks glendale2x for your prompt help and resolution, greatly appreciated!
