Function of Secundary DNS

Post by rowdy » Wed Jul 05, 2006 2:41 am

Hi y'all...

Maybe a stupid question, but what is the function of the secundary DNS?

The problem I'm having is that my ISP sometimes changes my IP adres of my home box. And because I don't have access to the DNS records of my website hosting service, they will charge me everytime I need to change the IP of my box. So in fact I'm seraching for a DNS service at wich I can create some subdomain(s) for my domain, that'll point to my home box' IP. Is that possible with this service provided by RollerNet?

Thanks in advance,

Rowdy

What you're looking for is a primary DNS service, which we don't currently offer. Our Secondary DNS service is used in conjunction with a master (primary) DNS server to provide redundancy. Secondary DNS loads the zone file from a master, or primary, DNS server.

Look around the web, rowdy. there are free DNS services out there. Can't think of what they are off hand, but like anything, if there's a need, there's someone to fill it! ;)

EveryDNS comes to mind offhand.

I'm going to add Primary DNS to the lineup, but mainly for completeness; there are a lot out there and many (most?) registrars offer DNS as well.

I personally use http://zoneedit.com/ which is completely free under certain circumstances. (If you are running a webserver off your home connection you're probably ok.) They also support dynamic dns to automatically update your DNS record when your IP changes.

In some cases, typically for home/personal links, people use Dynamic DNS Providers like DNS2GO to host DNS records. In these cases the records need to be modified using DNS2GO (or equivalent) online configuration utilities.
