I also do not have a record for mail.getwhatUwant.com registered with my DNS

Since I am using rollernetwork mail servers for my MX records I didn't think i needed to specify a mail.getwhatuwant.com record. Could this be the problem? Can someone please go over with me step by step, how to correctly implement the SMTP redirection? right now, I only have the rootdomain (getwhatuwant.com) and the following subdomains listed in my DNS account:

www, www2

My root domain contains an MX record pointing to mail.rollernet.us and mail2.rollernet.us....................

do I need to specify additional records to be able to receive mail? I can currently send mail through my mail server using my ISP's mail server (mail.optonline.net). I can not receive mail, however.

Desperate here, please help

There's a problem with your mail server configuration. All of the DNS and account manager settings are correct. I connected to the port indicated directly and saw this:

Code: Select all

sethm@isidore:~$ telnet 24.187.119.190 5355
Trying 24.187.119.190...
Connected to 24.187.119.190.
Escape character is '^]'.
+OK 24.187.119.190:5355 Merak 8.0.3 POP3 Tue, 02 Aug 2005 16:04:47 -0400 <20050802160447@24.187.119.190:5355>
quit
+OK 24.187.119.190:5355 closing connection
That's a POP3 server listening on port 5355, not an SMTP server. You need to change the delivery port to one that an SMTP server is listening on, at which point it should deliver the mail.

I tried changing my SMTP mail server port to 5535.......here is the message I get when I run the Merak Diagnostic test:

Testing DNS Server '167.206.3.161;167.206.3.160;167.206.3.227'...
DNS Test Successful.

Testing Primary Domain 'getwhatuwant.com' for MX Record...
Primary Domain Test Successful.

Testing Internet Connectivity...
Internet Connectivity Test Successful.

Testing Internet Services...
Internet Services Test Failed.
The following services are not running:
SMTP

Testing SMTP Message Transfer...
SMTP Message Transfer Test Failed.
Could not connect to mail server 'localhost'.

Your help is SO much appreciated. THanks

I'm not familiar with the product, but you'll have to make sure none of the port numbers are duplicated.

I forgot to mention that the port SMTP listens on is 25 but my ISP blocks port 25. So, i changed the SMTP port in Merak Mail server to 5535 and changed the POP3 from 5535 to 110. Now i get the error message listed above. Thanks

The diagnostic messages tell me that SMTP is not running, nor can I telnet to that port remotely. I wouldn't know how to start it since I've never used Merak mail server.

I actually got it working to a point where all of the messages in the "queue" were sent to my mail server when I released them

However, when i send a message from gmail to admin@getwhatuwant.com (which is an account on my mail server), the message does not go through. Does it take time for messages to be delivered? How much time can I expect it to take for messages to be delivered to my mail server from the point the messages are sent out?
Do i have to manually release the queue whenever I want messages to be delivered to my mail server, or is that done automatically?

Finally, do you know if a copy of all messages going through the roller network mail server is kept on file at rollernet.us? Conceptually, it is possible and that concerns me a bit. Thanks

The system will always try to deliver immediately, then queue it for perodic retry of the first attempt fails for any reason. Manual release is useful to attempt delivery before the next automatic retry.

The deferred queue is disk based for the duration that a message can't be delivered and the servers are backed up to tape in case of catastrophic failures. Many of our customers rely on our services to keep their messages safe while their system is impared or unreachable. If you mean do we store a duplicate of every message somewhere, the answer is no.
