Curious why mail is sent to Backup MX

Post by mckenzies »

Hi,

I have been watching my mail logs for my backup MX and I see lots of "spam", meaning connections that are blocked by DNSBL. I assume that spammer may lookup your secondary MX records in hopes of bypassing blacklists and spam filters. Is this the reason I see lots of mail?

Also, I have seen what I believe is at least 1 legitimate message in the log, marked deferred due to the greylist. Why would properly configured SMTP servers be sending email to my backup MX priority 20 instead of my primary mail server priority 10?

Thanks!

OK. I love it when I give my posters time and they find it themselves :-)

You got it right with the spammers, which is why having an open backup MX is always a bad idea.
