New Logging Options

Post by RollerNetSupport » Wed Dec 22, 2004 2:44 am

With the new server came a slightly revised account manager. Most of the changes were minor or purely cosmetic, but one of the major changes was done with regards to mail logging.

There's a lot of mail that passes through the system; too much to log every single connection. The table that holds SMTP entries grows in leaps of millions of entries per week; most of that will never be viewed. Instead of logging every single connection, we've changed the system to only log domains with filtering actions enabled. However, it is still possible to enable full logging without filtering.

A new filtering option has been added to the system that allows you to choose between no logging, full logging, or the default filter logging for each domain in the system. This option can be accessed on the MX and SMTP sections of the account manager by clicking on the "Edit" link for a domain.

Log viewing was also enhanced by providing some more verbose error messages, the ability to view all entries (not just the last 800), and a hard wrap option to prevent horizontal scrolling to read the logs.

If you have any questions, feel free to post them in the support forum or email them directly to us. Thanks!

Technical note: the raw logs (i.e. /var/log stuff) are handled separately from the logs that are available through the account manager.

Just to clarify, the log display in the account manager only indicates mail received by the mail servers and the result of any filtering. The logs currently do not indicate what the destination server response was, or the current status of the queue. (These features are forthcoming.)

Outgoing (SMTP sessions from the Roller Network to the final destination) logging has been added to the account manager.
