Policy Change: Enforced "Local Users" Table

Post by RollerNetSupport » Wed Sep 14, 2005 12:15 pm

Beginning in November, our mail services will require the use of the "Recipient Maps" feature to reject unknown users at the SMTP session level before they are accepted by our system. Recipient Maps is our version of a local users table since our system does not know what the valid addresses for a given domain would be.

This measure will be enforced for all accounts in order to eliminate the vast majority of bounce messages (also know as "backscatter") generated by our systems when the final destination rejects the message. Paid accounts will have other advanced options available (such as an auto-learning version, unlimited manual entries, and an API interface to update entries remotely) above the manual-only version available to free accounts.

There will be a two month grace period to give account holders time to update their recipient maps in the account manager before this policy change becomes effective. This will benefit all users, as it increases our reputation with the community by eliminating backscatter messages, as well as eliminating directory harvest attacks being relayed through our services.

(This announcement will be emailed and posted on the status page and in the account manager when a final date is set and the recipient maps feature is released.)

Just to clarify, this policy change does not have any bearing on our DNS services.

A bulk entry mode has been added to the recipient maps feature in the account manager. This mode will allow adding multiple email addresses to a recipient map table in a single step. It accepts the following input formats:

It will accept Postfix table notation as per the original request:

user@domain.com OK
user2@domain.com OK

(Any OK or REJECT is currently ignored; the entries will be added as allow/deny according to the selector in the account manager interface.)

It will also accept single email addresses, one per line:

user@domain.com
user2@domain.com

In the global table, the domain names are ignored. In a per-domain table, any domain name that does not match is ignored. In either mode, the domain name is stripped from the address and the "user" part is added to the table. To access this feature, click on the "Switch to bulk entry mode" link to change modes.

Recipient maps are now required. Please configure a valid user table for your domain as soon as possible.

Documentation on recipient maps is available on the help page:
http://acc.rollernet.us/help/index.php#usertable

If you have any questions about recipient maps or the documentation, don't hesitate to contact us at support@rollernet.us.
