Cogent and Sprint (Oct. 31, 2008)

Post by RollerNetSupport » Thu Oct 30, 2008 11:57 pm

We have received a few reports from customers who have services behind Cogent's network having difficulty with our services. Today around 3:08PM Pacific time, there were some reports on the NANOG mailing list that Cogent and Sprint are having a peering disagreement, which has led to a termination of said peering arrangement. The consequence is that Cogent has become isolated from parts of the internet at large. Since one of our BGP neighbors is Sprint, this disagreement between the two companies is affecting us.

We don't know who is at fault, but we are working to see if there's anything we can do to route around this. The last high-profile depeering with Cogent was with Level3, so this is not an isolated incident. For more information on the current matter:

The only thing we can really do is recommend that any of our customers with services behind Cogent is to contact whoever is hosting/providing those services and make them aware that Cogent's depeering is affecting you.

We've added a rule to our SAVVIS incoming route-map to bump the localpref for Cogent-originated routes. The net result is that we'll send any traffic that passes through Cogent's ASN over SAVVIS.

Although this fixes traffic from RollerNet to Cogent, traffic from Cogent to RollerNet seems to still be trying Sprint.

We've managed to come up with a fix that restores connectivity to Cogent via our SAVVIS circuit. It seems reverse traffic was trying to transit Cogent->XO->Sprint, and it's likely that Cogent only peers with XO and thus could not transit through XO to Sprint.

Update:

Based on Cogent's history of being deperred by other networks and crying foul over it, we tend to put more credit in Sprint's side of the story.

We've noticed that most of our test points from last Friday are no longer being routed or announced through Cogent. It seems those providers have found bandwidth elsewhere.

We do not have any additional information on this issue. Sprint and Cogent have temporarily reconnected, but we have no idea how either company will be resolving the issue or how temporary their reconnection really is.
