My ISP uses a Twitter handle solely for reporting network status. I'm subscribed to it with devices updates which means I get an SMS to my cellphone every time they send a Tweet. It was useful one time when they had a fire near their data center which took out the Internet. When someone from the company I work at called be to troubleshoot why the Internet was down, I was able to clearly tell them it was not our problem and we just had to wait til the issue was resolved instead of coming in to the office to fix the problem. I've written a few small Perl scripts myself to post messages to Twitter and it could probably be integrated in with the existing mechanism for http://status.rollernet.us/
which, by the way, seems to be down at the moment.
